Get to know Bethany

I hold a bachelor’s degree in nutrition and sociology from James Madison University, and I completed my dietetic internship at the University of Virginia Health System. Prior to starting my own practice, I worked at UVA Medical Center as a nutrition support dietitian with patients in the medical ICU, the digestive health ward, and in the outpatient Digestive Health Center.

I have completed extensive continuing education through the Ellyn Satter Institute and am trained in the How to Eat method as well as Satter’s Division of Responsibility in Feeding. If you’ve heard about or tried Intuitive Eating but found it hard to understand or implement, my approach is very likely to be a good fit for you. Briefly, I will work with you on how you eat rather than what you eat.

I have cared for patients with all sorts of conditions, from severe pancreatitis,  cancer, and liver disease, to IBS, IBD, celiac disease, and esophagus problems. My goal for you is to expand your diet as much as possible while managing your symptoms to maximize your quality of life.

In another life, I also studied sociology as a PhD student, and I hold a master’s degree in that field from UVA. My abiding interest in social inequality and its impact on health and disease was born during these years and continues to inform my practice every day as a dietitian.

I have been part of the Charlottesville community since 2004, when I moved here for graduate school. My husband and I got married here, and our beautiful children are Charlottesville natives. When I'm not working, I'm usually playing with them, cooking dinner, or reading fiction. Or let's be honest, watching TV.

Meet Christie

I have a master’s degree in clinical nutrition from the University of Pittsburgh, which is also where I completed my dietetic internship. After completing my degree, I spent two wonderful years in New Orleans, LA, working at Touro Infirmary where I developed an interest in the ICU and fostered my love affair with food and fun. My partner and I moved to Charlottesville, VA, in 2010 and although we planned to stay only a few years, the city captured our hearts, so we decided to stay.

Prior to joining Be Squared Nutrition, I worked as a nutrition support dietitian at UVA Medical Center, helping to nourish patients in the surgical/trauma ICU, the cardiothoracic ICU, and the neurology and neurosurgery ICU. Many of these patients could not eat by mouth and required tube feeding or IV nutrition to support their recovery. I have been a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) since 2009 and I am happy to now continue to help those requiring tube feeding and IV nutrition after they transition to the outpatient setting. In fact, I’m proud to be the only independently practicing CNSC in our region.

Given my clinical background, I rely on an evidence-based approach to guide your nutrition journey. I am weight inclusive, HAES® aligned, and believe that all bodies are good bodies.  I have attended Evelyn Tribole’s Intuitive Eating Pro Skills Training and would love to help you break the diet cycle and repair your relationship with food.

When I’m not working I am likely hanging with my two children and husband, working out with friends, or reading a good book. I also obsessively consume podcasts and enjoy binging a show.
